In honor of Doctor’s Day on March 30, Prowers Medical Center is celebrating its dedicated team of specialists who travel to Lamar to bring advanced care to our community. Please join us for our Doctor’s Day celebration on March 30 from 2 – 4 pm at the Clinic.

We’re fortunate in Lamar to have access to specialty care right here at home. Thanks to a team of 20 specialty doctors and 3 Physician Assistants, you can receive such advanced care as cardiology, orthopedics, podiatry, oncology, ENT, general surgery, spine specialty, hearing tests, and urology without having to travel out of town. That makes getting specialized care, easy.

“Our patients can access advanced care without having to spend a day or two traveling, thanks to our dedicated providers. It saves patients both time and money,” said Dawn Watts, Clinic Manager for Prowers Medical Center.

Visiting specialists also allow the hospital to offer specialty services and tests, including chemotherapy, cardiac stress tests, EKGs, radiology tests, and swing bed for after major surgeries such as hip replacements, to name a few. Cardiologists Dr. Gibson and Dr. Gustafson oversee the cardiac tests, and Dr. Hoyer, oncologist, and Lisa Adams, PA, direct chemotherapy care. Dr. Shapiro, pulmonologist, oversees respiratory therapy tests.

With two orthopedic surgeons—Dr. Meinig, and Dr. Porter, a new Spine Specialist Dr. Lee—two general surgeons—Dr. Smith and Dr. Swanson—one breast surgeon, Dr. DeWing, one vascular surgeon, Dr. Hurlbert, and several other specialists, patients can get more surgeries completed here in town than ever before.

“Several of our specialists perform small surgeries in our state-of-the-art operating rooms. For example, our orthopedic surgeons complete scopes; our ophthalmologist Dr. Roberts, performs cataract surgery; our podiatrist, Dr. Yakel, performs a variety of foot surgeries; and our ENT, Dr. Salazar, performs tonsil and ear tube surgeries,” Watts said.

The newest member of the team is Spine Specialist/Surgeon Dr. Larry Lee. Dr. Lee comes highly recommended with a medical degree from Drexel University and residency training at Tufts Medical Center. He offers advanced training in spine care, including spinal deformity. He travels from Centennial, Colorado to see patients locally a few times a month.

Thanks to Dr. Bickel, urologist, patients can conveniently receive care for bladder and kidney issues. Prowers Medical Center also provides audiology care from HearAid, Hearing aids from DigiCare, and prosthetics from the Hanger Clinic.

Most specialists come at least once a month—many twice a month—and often on set days (visit www.prowersmedical.com for details). For example, visiting cardiologists are available every week. Most specialists come from Pueblo, Colorado Springs or Denver, and some come from the Front Range. The Specialty Clinic has been at Prowers Medical Center for over two decades. The clinic is open 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

“Our visiting specialists know the quality of our hospital and have confidence in us to provide quality pre- and post-care. We are so grateful to have such a robust team of highly skilled physicians caring for our community,” Watts concluded.
