You might not realize that many types of surgeries are not only available but routinely performed right here in Lamar, at Prowers Medical Center.
From minimally invasive appendectomies and gall bladder removals to hip replacements, C-sections, knee cartilage restoration, hernia repairs, cataract surgeries and more, our renovated operating rooms regularly see a wide variety of surgeries performed by our team of experienced, board-certified surgeons.
General surgeries are performed by Dr. James R. DeLine and Dr. Ahmed M. Zihni, while gynecological surgeries are carried out by Dr. Christian Korkis and Dr. Rebecca Cisneros. Dr. Ryan Carr performs a variety of orthopedic surgeries, and specialty physicians Dr. Karl Becker and Dr. Eugenia White cover eye surgeries. Additional surgeons provide coverage as needed.
“We are proud that we offer these services so our community members don’t have to travel out of town to receive excellent surgical care,” said Beth Stroud, RN, Surgical Services Manager. “Our surgical services meet the same high standards as those in a big-city hospital.”
From Pre-Op to Post-Op and Beyond
Surgical services typically start with a surgical consultation. Patients meet with the appropriate surgeon to go over their symptoms or needs to discuss if surgery is the appropriate next step. Nonsurgical options are always considered first
In the days before surgery, a Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) nurse helps patients through the process of any needed testing and prepping. The PAT nurse is also available to answer questions patients may have regarding their upcoming procedure.
Our operating rooms are outfitted with state-of- the-art equipment and staffed by highly trained nurses and appropriate ancillary staff to assist the surgeons. A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist provides anesthesia and nausea control as well as pain blocks, helping patients with post-operative pain management.
Depending upon the type of surgery performed, some patients are discharged home the same day, while other procedures require an overnight hospital stay. Because surgeries are performed close to home, it’s easy for patients to be accompanied by a family member or friend during their pre-op and post-op care. Treatment is convenient, and any follow-up care, such as progress appointments with the surgeon or physical therapy, also takes place at Prowers Medical Center.
In addition to surgeries, other procedures such as colonoscopies, endoscopies, hemorrhoid banding, node biopsies, wound debridement and more are performed. A new ultrasound machine allows for PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) and midline placements for those needing therapeutic long-term intravenous antibiotics, antibiotics and blood draws.
“We have surgical team members and nursing staff who grew up right here in Lamar,” Stroud said. “We care about this community and are proud to provide high-quality care close to home.”
