Communication is the key component of quality healthcare. At Prowers Medical Center, we are committed to providing the best possible care to every patient who enters our doors – which is why we offer Language Access Services. These services are an essential part of the healthcare system and community.

“When a patient is hospitalized, cultural and linguistic barriers can affect the quality of medical attention that a patient receives,” said Elia Trujillo, Language Coordinator at Prowers Medical Center. “It is crucial that we offer healthcare in a way that our patients and their families understand best.”

Language Services in Action

The team at Prowers Medical Center provides Language Access Services in-house with qualified medical interpreters in many different service lines, from the Emergency Department to Home Health and more. To better serve patients who do not speak English and who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Prowers Medical Center Language Access Program is dedicated to learning and growing to meet the needs of our growing community.

Medical Interpreters build trust across cultures within the community and within the organization, which helps in bridging the language gap in healthcare. When patients can’t communicate with their providers, they can’t be diagnosed or given the treatment they need. Medical interpreters reduce the risk of a patient not knowing their diagnosis and they strive to help patients understand their treatment plans and recommended follow-up care.

Other ways language access services can be utilized are through:

  • Our 24-hour Telephone Interpretation Service
  • For those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, through a telecommunication TTY/TTD device. TTY/TTD Line: 719-336-4459 and VRI American Sign Language 24 hours a day
  • A telephonic line for community members to obtain information regarding language access services

All Language Interpreter Services at Prowers Medical Center are provided free of charge and are handled with strict confidentiality.

“By providing interpretation services to our patients in our community, we help with the patient experience and provide a welcoming environment that makes it easier for patients to communicate their healthcare needs,” Trujillo said.

Creating an Equitable Healthcare System

Prowers Medical Center is dedicated to learning and adapting to meet the needs of our growing community. Our priority is to provide the Language Access Services that patients need to receive the quality care they deserve.

“Prowers Medical Center is committed to creating and delivering culturally competent healthcare services,” Trujillo said. “We strive to meet the social, cultural and linguistic needs of patients regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity or social status. Listening to our community and their needs have been at the forefront in making our organization more equitable to provide quality care and help improve health outcomes.”
