Thanks to Charles Maxwell, a former resident, Lamar opened its first hospital in 1920, called Charles Maxwell Hospital. In 1946, the Dominican Sisters of the Immaculate Conception purchased the hospital and renamed it Sacred Heart Hospital. In 1967, the sisters announced that they planned to close the hospital due to lack of funding, prompting the formation of the Prowers County Hospital District. The district assumed responsibility and renamed the hospital Prowers Medical Center, and still operates the hospital today.
In 1978, a new facility was built, with three major additions over the years. The hospital added primary care clinics, including High Plains Community Health Center and the Holly Medical Clinic.
Today’s campus includes 25 private patient rooms, 4 family birthing rooms, an outpatient sleep study laboratory, a special care unit, a chapel, a healing garden, a visitors’ welcome center, a gift shop, state-of-the-art operating rooms, advanced emergency services, a large rehabilitation gym, and an advanced radiology department with digital mammography, CT scan, MRI and a digital X-ray suite.
Prowers Medical Center is a certified CMS Critical Access Hospital, and was named a Top 100 Critical Care Hospital in 2017. Prowers Medical Center is DNV-GL Accredited, an accomplishment that signifies we have met strict national standards of care for quality and patient safety.
A Message from our CEO
Craig R. Loveless
At Prowers Medical Center, we believe that every community has different needs and we are committed to growing and enhancing our services based on the feedback we hear from our best customers – our patients. Providing quality, accessible healthcare is our primary focus as we develop, introduce and implement programs and services that keep patients close to home.
When it comes to capturing the essence of life in our rural, agricultural region, we’ve found that no one is more dedicated than the folks who live here. Just as the farmers and ranchers take pride in the food and many services they offer to the area, our healthcare team takes pride in providing quality healthcare to their family, friends, and neighbors with a personal touch.
Our success depends on the men and women who make up our healthcare team. Our team takes pride in what they do. They feel responsible for the outcomes of their efforts, and they recognize their work as a direct reflection of themselves.
Prowers Medical Center is owned and operated by the Prowers County Hospital District. The District is governed by a board of directors elected by the citizens who reside in the district (Prowers and Baca Counties). Although the District receives a small amount of tax support, in order to maintain our high quality state-of-the-art healthcare services, we are dependent upon revenue generated from providing those services and from contributions to the Prowers Medical Center Foundation.
Our efforts to provide quality and affordable healthcare services is ongoing. If you have any suggestions for improvement, please do not hesitate to contact us.
