When you think of infusion services, likely chemotherapy comes to mind. Yet Prowers Medical Center Infusion Services provide much more than chemotherapy, offering infusions for a variety of conditions—even immunotherapy for cancers, which, according to the American Cancer Society, stimulate your immune system to work harder and smarter to attack cancer cells.
“Infusion therapy services go well beyond chemotherapy,” said Robin Thacker, PharmD, BCPS, clinical pharmacist at Prowers Medical Center.
In the last few decades immunotherapy has become an important part of treating some types of cancer. Immunotherapies work to help your own body attack cancer cells, often without the side effects of chemotherapy.
Besides cancer treatments, Prowers Medical Center offers infusions for advanced diabetes, kidney and liver issues, MS, lupus, Crohn’s disease, anemias, and more, along with IV antibiotics, blood transfusions, hydration and injection services. The hospital is happy to coordinate with regional oncologists and other physicians to administer infusion therapy. With a doctor’s order completed, simply call and get an appointment to start treatment.
“We have access to any medication your doctor orders and your insurance will approve,” Thacker said.
Some local cancer patients see Dr. Robert Hoyer, an oncologist with UCHealth’s Cancer Center at the Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, and his physician assistant, Lisa Adams. The two come to Prowers Medical Center’s Specialty Clinic twice a month to see patients. Yet infusion staff can easily coordinate chemotherapy with any oncologist that a patient chooses.
Infusion Therapy Services at Prowers Medical Center sometimes feels more like social hour than healthcare services. Because it’s close to home, patients often bring along family and friends to keep them company while they get therapy, or make friends with others that they see regularly at the center.
“Having a full-service infusion department at Prowers Medical Center makes it more convenient for patients. They don’t have to dedicate three to four hours a day driving somewhere else for care, and they can have people they know at their side. Often there is a lot of chatter between patients, as they learn from and support each other,” said Christine Laird, RN, with Infusion Services.
Christine provides infusions five days a week, with back up on the weekends from the medical/surgical unit at Prowers Medical Center. Along with delivering the infusions, she provides education on medications and self-care. Christine is a registered nurse who is in the process of becoming chemotherapy certified.
“The pharmacy and infusion therapy teams work closely together to make sure our patients are top of mind during the entire process. We want to make it as easy as possible for our patients, so
their time here goes smoothly and they can get back to their lives as quickly as possible,” said Katie Kurtz, Certified Pharmacy Technician.
