Annual bloodwork is important. It lets you and your provider track changes in your health over time. If you have a family history of a certain disease, or if you know you are on the road to developing a disease, such as diabetes or heart disease, you can do something about it. You can slow, and sometimes even halt the process. That’s empowering.
“When done each year, screenings give your providers the comparative information they need to help you stay healthy,” said Tress Gadash, Lab Manager for Prowers Medical Center.
The comprehensive health fair labs can detect a variety of conditions including gout, liver disease, lipid disorders (cholesterol), thyroid disorders, anemia, precancerous conditions, infections, platelet disorders, kidney disorders, and diabetes, plus a PSA test helps to identify and check for prostate cancer.
“The Prowers Medical Center Heath Fair provides a great opportunity for people to get an in-depth health screening at an affordable cost,” Gadash said.
Prowers Medical Center has worked hard through the years to keep labs affordable, yet comprehensive. For $25 you receive several tests, including: a CBC (complete blood count), glucose, uric acid, liver enzymes, bone health & thyroid screens, Hemoglobin A1C, lipid panel and more. For an extra $10, men can receive a PSA screening test for prostate cancer. For a complete listing, visit the hospital’s website.
“The Health Fair is not a revenue generator for Prowers Medical Center. Our motivation is to create a healthier community by offering these tests at an affordable cost,” Gadash said.
About 600 people attend the annual health fair at the hospital in May each year. The lab’s 10 employees—one manager, three phlebotomists, and six lab technicians—gear up to complete blood draws at the event, and then process them quickly afterwards.
“We often have results back and finalized within 24 hours. Once finalized by Lab staff, the results are available on the Patient Portal. Our last step is sorting and stuffing results into envelopes to mail out the next day. People who attend the health fair can expect results by early the following week,” Gadash said.
If you have not signed up for the Patient Portal, provide your email address at registration. It will be entered into the system and from there, you can create your account. You can also sign up at the health fair or go to the website at www.prowersmedical.com to learn more.
The challenge for the Lab Team during the health fair is to process all the lab work quickly, while managing their normal daily work flow. Prowers Medical Center performs nearly 90% of daily labs in-house, only using outside labs for specialized testing.
“We pride ourselves on customer service. We want our patients to have the best experience possible, and we are constantly looking for new methods and new, less invasive tests to offer our community,” Gadash concluded.
Plan on attending this year’s annual health fair and taking advantage of low cost labs, activity and information booths, refreshments, a free blood pressure test, and more. The 39th annual Health Fair event will be held on Tuesday, May 9th through Thursday, May 11th. The event will run between 7:00 am and 11:00 am, all three days.
